In 2007 the Raad voor de Journalistiek has presented its guidebook for journalistic behaviour. Because of the development of standards concerning publications on the Internet, the guidebook was amended for the first time in April 2008. In 2010 the guidebook has been amended for the second time.
In the spring of 2014 the council brought its Guidelines up for discussion because it felt the need for strengthening and clarification on some points, in view of the current digital age. In a letter to a large number of journalistic organizations, the Dutch Union of Journalists, the Society of Chief Editors and media ombudsmen and through his weblog the chairman of the council has expressed to being interested in views of peers and best practices. The responses were discussed within the council after which the Guidelines have been rewritten. The revised Guidelines were presented at the annual meeting of the council on May 27th. 2015.
In the recent annual meeting of the council on June 6th. 2018 a new paragraph under chapter A. was adopted, in which is stated that journalists must consider the particular vulnerability of certain groups.
